The primary and high school students of Young & surrounds have become increasingly bike savvy, engaging in an in-depth, pedagogical-based bike program.
Simply, ReCycle is turning used bikes and parts into functioning machines. Hundreds of students participate locally and 100% of students engaged now have access to an allocated bike & are learning how to maintain and repair their rides.
Max and Nathan of Young High School run the ReCycle program, during which students engage with every aspect of bicycle application, mechanics and safety.
Students can bring their own bike to school for repairs or practice their bike manoeuvres during breaks, which has had a huge impact upon the sport’s popularity as well as the overall skill acquisition.
For those students who do not own a bike, an extensive range of bicycles have been donated by Bike Odyssey, The Young Cycle Group and Berry Mountain Cycles (which also donated $2,000 worth of high-end tools and equipment). With scores of bikes, helmets and a recently donated support vehicle (B0), bike options have attained new heights in town.
In 2026, North Young Public School committed to a full year of ReCycle, facilitated a purpose – built shed and are in the process of creating an on-site Pump Track to further enhance the students’ skill-building options! Young High School offers ‘ReCycle’ as a year 9/10 elective course, as well as the eminent school sport; whilst collaborating with Young Public School via a Primary linkage program until the end of the year. Monteagle Public has also been involved with ReCycle, both as a cycling destination and a recipient of extra junior bikes.
‘Ride2School’ is promoted by the Department of Education, and the ReCycle program fits perfectly within the national framework – of increased road awareness and riding with skill and safety. By aligning with private enterprise, the program has created a significant impact zone upon students in the local area and looks to continue to do so into the future; exhibiting a cohesive union between educational facilities, social enterprise and private sector investment.
