The Ray White Challenge Cup is back in the hands of the Cherrypickers this week as they showed what they’re made of with a huge 43-10 win over South City on Saturday.
It was a slow start, but once the Pickers got going, there was no stopping them as they crossed the line for try after try.
Saturday saw tries from Charlie Woolford, Winiata Cherrington, Cooper Smith, Jesse Corcoran, Toataua Porima and Matt Noakes.
President of the Club, Andrew Smith, said, “The win was terrific. The first half was a bit of a tight tussle, but we certainly showed what we can do in the second half once things started to gel and we put everything together, and we piled on quite a few points. It was a good day out.
“Kane Ball was back, and he has only played 30 or 40 minutes of footy this year, across two games. He came on in the second half and made a big change, but Charlie Woolford was outstanding in both halves as well, so credit to him. Toataua Porima was excellent.
“They were following the plans; completion was high, and we capitalised. It all came together, which was good. We will prepare very similarly. The challenge cup will be on the line again.
“As per the Challenge Cup rules, Temora are getting a 10.5 start with it. It will be a big day for that, but as far as preparation goes, we know what we’re up for against Temora; it’s going to be a tough game. They always bring it to us when they come over. We need to be consistent with our games and, hopefully, get back-to-back wins.
“It is terrific having the Challenge Cup back in Young’s hands; it’s always an added bonus, a bit of a cherry on top. We are there to get the 2 points and win the game, but you can cover that margin if the other team’s been given a start. You like to hold onto the Cup, and there’s a little cash incentive along with it as well, so that always helps with the club to have it.”
The Pickers will attempt to slay the Dragons this Sunday at Alfred Oval. This match will be an epic decider as both sit close to each other on the ladder and are looking to make statements as the finals approach.
