Hilltops Council has issued and urgent community appeal following dangerous recycling
contamination.
In recent months, the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Victoria Street in Young, has experienced several incidents of hazardous contamination being found within
recyclable materials, including used syringes and deceased animals.
The facility is operated by the Elouera Association, where recyclable materials are hand
sorted by staff. The presence of other wastes pose a serious risk to the health and safety of
these workers.
To minimise unnecessary risk to workers and ensure effective recycling practices for the community, Hilltops Council is urging all residents to dispose of waste responsibly and
ensure that only accepted recyclable items are placed in recycling bins. Please refer to guides on sharps and recycling below.
Under the NSW Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, inappropriately depositing used syringes or other dangerous materials in public places or open private places is an offence (this includes dedicated waste collection service bins). Individuals can face an immediate penalty notice of $1,000, with maximum court penalties of up to $25,000.
Residents who witness illegal dumping are encouraged to report the incident to Hilltops Council or through the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Report Illegal Dumping (RID) Online system to assist with timely investigation and enforcement.
