The Young Yabbies on Saturday got a win in Condobolin 25 – 24, right before a much-needed break this week for the long weekend.
Andrew Rice of the Young Yabbies said it was good to put an end to Condobolin’s winning streak.
“They were riding high. We had found some form of our own with wins against Wyalong and Temora, so we were pretty confident going in that. We had our game plan for Condobolin, which we executed very well, mostly, but we spent a lot of the game defending, because they were very good at holding onto the ball; they’re a very good outfit.
“We took our opportunities when we could, and they got two early tries within the first 10 minutes; we managed to get a penalty goal in that, so it was 3 to 12. But then we launched an attacking raid with about 5 minutes to go to get a score on, got a try through Ethan Miller, so then the score at halftime was 12 to 10 their way.
“Then the 2nd half out of the gates, they broke through our defence and scored a quick try to make
it 10 to 17. We slotted a penalty goal to make it 13-17.
“Then we spent what felt like 15 minutes defending on our try line, repelling attack after attack from Condobolin. Our halfback, Liam, timed his run perfectly, managed to intercept the ball, ran about 60 metres, kicked the ball ahead for our five-eight Ben Jones to regather and score under the posts to make it 17-20 our way.
“Condobolin, as they do, hit back and made it 20 to 24. Then we had a few lucky breaks and managed to get down in their 22 and kept peppering their line. They kept holding us at bay, but we managed to get the ball out wide to our young gun, Ollie Edwards, to score in the corner to put us ahead 24-25.
“We just held on for the last 5 minutes of the game, repelling Condo attack after attack, but we gave away a high penalty, about 40 metres out. Condobolin opted to take the shot, but thankfully for the Yabbies, they came up short, and we went on to win the game.
“This weekend we have the bye for the June long weekend, which is very much needed. There are lots of sore bodies.
“We are halfway through now. The next game is Grenfell at home next week. Then we have a road trip to Harden and Boorowa for their ladies’ days, which we are looking forward to.”
