On Sunday, the 31st of May at Sawpit Gully Oval will be the Cherry Cup, a 7-a-side mixed teams hockey competition.
Prize money will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place.

Brendon Sheppard, President of the Young Combined Hockey Association, said the committee have been getting it back up and running after Covid.
“It’s basically our little tournament that we run as an association in Young, and it’s been quite successful over the last couple of years. We’ve been bringing teams from places like Cowra, and we’ve had interest from further towns as well. We’ve also got plenty of local people from Young playing in different teams in this tournament, which is good.
“We’re looking for people who are current players, used to play and just want to come back for a day and have a bit of fun. It’s quite social. There is prize money, but again, it’s more of a fun day out to spend time for the love of the game and meet people. It gives you an opportunity to have a run around. It’s not too serious.
“This year has been really good. We had our seven-a-side twilight competition in term one, and we had a few teams there, which was good. We’ve also got Hook into Hockey, our junior introduction program, which is running this term and next term again, and we’ve got about 30-plus juniors coming along to that each Thursday at the tennis courts, which is excellent.
“This week is actually bring-a-friend week, so kids get to bring a friend of theirs at no cost. Those kids can come along and experience it to see what hockey’s all about, come and have fun with us and learn about the game, which is exciting.
“Our winter competition has kicked off, too. Our premier competition has started. It’s quite competitive and quite evenly matched three rounds in, which is really good. We’re having a lot of success there.
“Two of our juniors are currently in Bathurst. They got selected for the Riverina side, and they’ve come through our hockey program, and they’re playing all teams from across the state all week, which is really amazing for kids from our town.
“Our registration closes on the 24th of May for the Cherry Cup. It’s smaller fields. It’s different rules to a normal game. It’ll be for 12 years and older to play, and you don’t have to have a team. If you are just an individual and you want to play, or there’s a couple of you, but you don’t have enough for a team, register anyway, and we will find you a team, or we will put a team together.
“We have a lot of people in this town who used to play hockey, whether it be here or when they were growing up, and they don’t seem to find the time to come back. I encourage them to come and have a run for a day and see if you can reinvigorate yourself and find that love for the game again.
