On Sunday afternoon, the Young Cherrypickers hit the paddock in Tumut, which resulted in a 28 – 28 draw. This means Young comes away with one point, but it still means Young needs to work if they want to make it all the way to the Premiership this year.
Andrew Smith, President of the Young Cherrypickers, said it was better than a loss, but believed it should have been a win for them if some small mistakes were tweaked.
“It’s always difficult against Tumut, but we came away with a draw. We have a habit of starting slow, taking a bit of time to get into the game and letting a couple of tries in before we get going, but there were a lot of mistakes, which didn’t help us,” he said.
“All in all, we came away from Tumut with a point, and it’s better than a loss. “We absolutely have a top side. With new players come new combinations as well, so we are navigating around that. Jesse Corcoran came back from injury on the weekend. It was good to see him run around the field. He makes a big difference. “We had to make a late change with one of our players coming down with tonsillitis.
“There are a lot of players yet to come back into the side that’ll only trengthen us.
“Once we get everyone back on deck and start putting it together, we are certainly going to be one of the sides to beat.
“This week, we are taking on Cootamundra. It is always one of the good rivalry games. We always look forward to playing Coota, whether it be at home or over there. It doesn’t matter where you’re sitting on the ladder; we will play our best. They’re above us there. They’ve had a good start to the year, so they’re a good side to beat.
“It is always a tough game whenever you play them. Expect some fireworks.
“We are at home this week, which is always good to get a little bit of an edge, but certainly we will be firing and ready to take them on.”
On Saturday at Alfred Oval, the Cherries will play Cootamundra.
