Progress slow but everyone’s behind Roy Jewitt’s recovery

After the devastating news of Roy Jewitt’s stroke two weeks ago, the recovery of the community hero has been a major source of interest in Young and across the South West Slopes.

An example of the level of community interest and support can be seen in the GoFundMe which was set up after the events of October 24, which has raised over $56,000 from 449 separate donors.

Close friend and Harden Hawks coach Nick Hall has been monitoring the situation, and provided an update on Wednesday as to Roy’s wellbeing.

“Roy is having a slow recovery and that is what happens when you have these things,” he said. “There’s little incremental improvements, he had a little bit of a bump and a difficult week the first week and a very slow recovery, but this week he has come out of the ICU and has gone to the stroke ward and he is starting all the really slow rehab stuff that is very small.

“He is starting at the start of his journey and it’s really slow and it’s probably frustrating for him and the family and things, but I think they are all noting every little improvement.”

“At the start of the journey he is still healing from the stroke and what happens.”

As for the challenges ahead, Hall said that Roy first needs to heal from the initial stroke before he can begin the rehab process in earnest.

“He has to start healing before he can worry about where he is at and what he has got and what he has to do,” he said.

“This is all very vague, but it is because we don’t really know.

“He’s doing okay and he’s having a few visitors.”

As for the community, Hall had a me-sage to Roy and his family on behalf of the people of Young and Harden.

“The community sends cheerios to Roy’s family and he’s having slow progress, but positive progress.

“He’s not the old Roy yet, but he will get there because he’s a tough bugger.”
