Schiller puts Young on the right track at Flemington

His horse ‘Saint George’ may have finished in an uninspiring 22nd place, but Young jockey Tyler Schiller still achieved one of the most coveted positions in racing on Tuesday as he rode in his maiden Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse.

The local jockey put in a good effort on a horse that has struggled to place in recent times, now having failed to do so in its last eight races with recent form of 8-4-9-5-0 in its last five starts.

After the race Schiller said that his five-year-old had a good run but simply struggled with the tempo of the race.

“He had the right run,” he said.

“He followed the winner [but] just didn’t see the trip out and probably couldn’t get comfortable either with a bit of a stop-start tempo.”

Heavy outsider ‘Knight’s Choice’ took home the coveted cup after starting the race at a remarkable $81 to deliver a second Melbourne Cup for co-trainer Sheila Laxon alongside John Symons.

Japanese raider Warp Speed crossed the line in second in a photo finish, while Irish horse Okita Soushi and British-owned Australian horse Zardozi rounded out the top four.
