Criterion get out of jail in low-scoring showdown with Bribbaree

The Criterion Bin Chickens have picked up their second win of the season after a two wicket victory against Bribbaree at Gus Smith Oval on Saturday.

The Bin Chickens won the toss and elected to bowl, with the decision to send Bribbaree in paying dividends early with the wickets of Nicholas McRaye for 3, Jack Woods on 4 and Daniel Dovern for a duck, giving the Criterion side the upper hand.

Opener Liam Miller fought hard, making 36 off 34 deliveries to top score for the Rams, before he was bowled by Ethan Richens, leaving Bribbaree at 4-52.

After another wicket fell to leave the Rams at 5-52, number five Ethan Miller added seven runs before also being dismissed.

Scores of 2 and 13 to Zabir and Mohammed Alam, and the addition of two further runs from number eleven Liam Payne were the only additions from the tail, as Bribbaree were bowled out for 78 in just 27.3 overs.

Javarn and Declan Hurcum each picked up three wickets, while Ethan Richens and Jacob Dodge took two for the Bin Chickens in a strong bowling performance.

In what was supposed to be a fairly straight forward run chase, Criterion got off to the worst possible start, with opener Adam Bloor falling for a fourth ball duck.

While fellow opener Javarn Hurcum backed up his strong bowling performance and began accruing runs at the other end, a slow collapse was occurring at the other end of the wicket.

Jack McRae was the first to go for just 4, followed by Ethan Richens for 1 and Cole Bloor for a duck.

In at six, Kieran Richens could only manage 6, with Declan Hurcum making just 4, and Matthew Dunn 7, before each was dismissed.

Meanwhile, Javarn Hurcum played a strong captain’s knock despite the chaos at the other end of the wicket to finish on a team high 37 runs off 50 balls, before  being caught and bowled by Zabir Alam.

That left the Bin Chickens at 8-65, just 14 runs short of a well below par total, but in danger of losing the match with just two wickets in hand.

In the end, it was a lower order partnership between Jacob Dodge and Rhys Featherstone which saw Criterion get home for a narrow victory in a low-scoring but equally tense game of cricket.

Next weekend sees Criterion take their winning form into a home clash with Temora Exies Regades at Gus Smith Oval, while the Rams will take on the Murringo Mavericks at Cranfield Oval. The Mavericks themselves fought hard on the weekend, but were unable to over come the top of the table Junee Stallions at Burns Park in Junee.

Under assault from the powerful Junee bowling unit, Murringo could only post 50 before begging bowled out, a total they were always going to be unable to defend against the unbeaten Stallions, who chased it down in 14.5 overs, despite the Mavericks managing to take a remarkable four wickets in the short chase.

Despite the loss, Murringo retained second spot on the ladder behind Junee, with a rematch in the finals a likely prospect at this point of the season.
