Great Day of Racing at Burrangong Picnic Race Club – Young

The Burrangong Picnic Race Committee held their annual race meeting on Saturday with a 6 race card on display for spectators.

Young News spoke to Bill Perrignon who amongst other duties on the committee, looks after sponsorship with Ben Simmons.

“It was a pretty good day. We were happy with it considering there was a few other events on this time of the year.

“I think there was around 1500 people attend.

“We had 30 horses across the six races.

“The thing we were stoked about was the number of small tents the businesses put together in the marquee section.

“We sold ten marquees for about 20 people each.

The races also had a big family flavour and this was shown on the Fashions on the Fields with plenty of entries in the younger sections as well as the adult sections.

“It was a big family day. There were a lot of kids on the fashions on the field and as a committee we are very happy about as it is a family day out.

“There were a large number of kids in attendance and we don’t get a gauge on attendance as Under 16 are free.

“Up on the stage there were a lot of kids. It was probably the most contested event on fashions on the field.

Sally Martin, Lady of the Day.

“There are a few people that do the fashions circuit. We are also very grateful to Suzie Duff who was our MC, and our judges Mel and Mark Crutcher, they were fantastic, and all of our sponsors. Also Liz and Cath Sheridan who were integral in putting fashions on the field together.

“Ned and Sarah Mellee did a magnificent job in putting the races together along with Nick. It was a big week for him and he did a serious amount of work.

“Nick has put in a massive effort this year being President of the Rugby Club, President of the race committee and working hard in his business.

“We are very grateful to our sponsors who have looked after us this year. A lot of loyal businesses in Young that continue to support us.

“The Cup race is worth $8000 and it’s another big thanks to Delta Agribusiness, our major sponsor, for their fifth year of support.

“The race was won by $2.80 favourite Fabulous Choice trained by Dan McCarthy and ridden by Henry Jaggard (68.5kg), followed 0.17 length by Chookster trained by Connie Greig and ridden by Leandro Ribeiro (64kg) and 0.47 length to Celtic Harp also trained by Connie Greig and ridden by Dylan Parrott (68kg, carried 65).

Another fine day of racing after Coota’s Tab event and leading in to the Harden Picnic Races.
