The Young Cherrypickers took to Geohex Stadium on Saturday for Round 9 of the Group Nine competition, where they came out victorious, even if only just, 34 – 32 against Wagga Brothers.
President of the Young Cherrypickers, Andrew Smith, said, “It was a fairly tight tussle. It wasn’t the performance we were expecting, but we were very good in short blocks.
“Brothers definitely were a surprise packet. Those guys are going to potentially be a giant killer and get a couple of wins during the year, so it was good to get away with the two points because they had a kick right at full time to draw it, and the last thing we wanted was another draw.
“There’s still a lot we’ve got to work on. We’re still down on troops. Hopefully, we’ll get a few back this week. It was the first win away for the year. We had three draws, but the first actual win away was last week.
“We’ll definitely take a bit of confidence out of that game going into this week.
“This will be our third Wagga game in four weeks, this week. The last long travel, thank god. The rest are all fairly close by.
“We’re playing for the Challenge Cup this week. South City currently hold it. They’ve been given a 9.5 start, so we’re more than capable of that. We’re definitely going to have to bring our game.
“It’s about catching the momentum swings and playing the way we’re capable of playing rather than going into the grind and playing to the opposition’s standard. That’s what we’ve got to combat. It is a mentality issue at the moment, but once they put it together, we’ll certainly give it a good crack.
“Reserve Grade won 18-10. They were down a lot of troops, so it was a good win for them. The tackle girls, they had their first game in nearly five weeks. They narrowly went down 20-18. That was actually a grand final rematch. They kicked a penalty goal after the siren to beat us on that one. The under-18s went down 24-20. Another close tussle. Our tag ladies, they copped a bit of a bad loss. They were down to 10 players, and Brothers is one of the top teams, always up for the challenge.
“Jack Rolfe made his first-grade debut and scored a try as well, which was good.”
The Cherrypickers play South City at Harris Park on Saturday.
