Young faced a tough day on Sunday against a strong Wagga Kangaroos side at Geohex Stadium that resulted in Young’s third draw in four weeks. Coming off a long weekend bye, the Cherrypickers were ready to get a win on the board, but Wagga managed to hold them to a stalemate.
Despite this, the President of the Club, Andrew Smith, is certain this will only make Young hungrier for the second half of the season.
“You could take it two ways, it’s disappointing in a way. With a couple of those games, Tumut, and most recently, the Roos games, there were a lot of moments there that we had a chance to win the game, but we just couldn’t ice that moment.
“The other way is knowing a draw is not a loss, so you’re still coming away with one point. There are pros and cons to both. The Gundagai game with the draw, they are top of the table, a very good side, we were down on players, and to come away with a draw with those guys was good as well, but Sunday’s game was a little bit disappointing to be honest.
“We had our chances, four or five times there to really put our foot down and score some points, but we were just the same again. We just couldn’t ice those moments.
“Also losing Boro Navori in the warm-up and already down a few players with injuries, that didn’t help, but the guys that come in, young Nick Canellis, it was his first grade debut, he did a terrific job, absolutely terrific, scored a good try. Anything they threw at him, he diffused, so that was really good. Really good signs for the future with those sort of guys, any of the young fellas coming up, they all do a good job for us.”
Nick’s own father presented him with his jersey after he put in the hard yards to make it to first grade.
“This weekend is Albury at home. Thankfully, we don’t have to travel down there. It certainly helps us that they are travelling to us.
“We don’t have to change a lot. It’s a matter of the combinations gelling together. We have struggled in that aspect because we’ve had to change things around due to injuries, but once we get that right, we will be okay.
“We are expecting Albury to get a few players back; they’ll be strong. They just lost to Tumut in Tumut, but it’s always hard to go up there.
“I’m sure they will be doing their homework and putting a plan in place to get the win.”
Cherrypickers will play Albury Thunder at Alfred Oval on June 20.
