The Young Cherrypickers have finally put a win on the board after a series of draws against Albury Thunder at Alfred Oval.
The Cherrypickers saw four tries from Nicholas Canellis, Matt Noakes, Che Hyslop, and Jesse Corcoran. Three conversions from Matt Murray as well.
President of Young Cherrypickers, Andrew Smith, said it was a good win to get.
“It was very pleasing from the boys, especially in pretty horrendous conditions.
They completed well, held the ball, and it was pretty surprising to see a good completion rate in those conditions, to be honest.
“They always knew Albury were going to come out firing; they were coming off the back of a disappointing loss to Tumut. They’ve got some good players amongst them. The boys were definitely up for it, but those two losses previously certainly stirred them on a bit as well.
“The crowd was really down. We didn’t expect a huge crowd with the weather conditions and there only being three grades on the day, with Albury not fielding a ladies tackle team and their 18s forfeiting. That made the day fairly short, but those weather conditions certainly didn’t help either.
“Jonah Latu was excellent. He was probably the standout on the side. He was required to play a lot more than he normally did with Jayke Hogan getting an injury, so he had a good go.
“Matt Murray had a good game at the back at fullback. He defused a lot of bombs and handled the ball well, and with the conditions, it was certainly a very tough task.
“This week, we take on Brothers in Wagga. They’re coming off the back of a good win against Coota. They’d certainly have their tail up, Coota sitting in 2nd and them sitting last.
“They’ll be sure to come out firing, and they’ve got a couple of big players amongst them too. We’re not going to go there thinking it’s going to be an easy win; we will certainly be up for it.”
The Pickers play the Brothers at Geohex Stadium on Saturday.
