Despite a strong start to the 2026 season, the Young Cherrypickers withstood the Bulldogs’ momentum, winning 38-22 at home on Saturday.
The boys had the privilege of welcoming legendary Picker, Garry Nicolls, into the sheds to present
their jersey. Nicco bleeds red, white and blue, having played alongside many former Cherrypicker legends and still an integral part of our club, taking care of our interchange.
The Club look forward to introducing more past to present legends throughout the year as part of our end-of-year reunion celebrations.
President of the Club, Andrew Smith, said, “We had a home game, and it was a good game. We started well and finished well; there’s some patchy work in the middle, where we’ve got to put 80 minutes together.
“Overall it was a good win.
“Quite a few good runs from Aborosio Navori. He was probably the pick of the players, but he had a few good touches and scored a good try. He was the highlight of the game.
“Next game is Gundagai at Gundagai.
“It will be a top-of-the-table clash. Gundagai are a point in front of us, sitting in first. It’s going to be a really difficult game, especially with Kane Ball re-injuring his hamstrings, so he’s going to be gone for a few weeks again.
“We will go into it with a replacement for him, and we will certainly put our best foot forward, but Gundy at Gundy is always going to be a tough game, but I’m sure the boys will be up to the match.
“The crowd was terrific. We had the juniors playing across the tracks too, so there were quite a few parents and they made their way over in time for first grade after the juniors finished. It was a nice and warm day. It was perfect for football.
“It was a full day of footy with the juniors just across the tracks. Coota didn’t have a ladies tackle team, so it was a bit of a late start for us, but certainly finished well with a big crowd.”
They play Gundagai at Anzac Park on Sunday.
