Koyo Matsuri, or Autumn Leaves Festival will return to Cowra on May 1-2 to celebrate Japan’s Koyo season (when leaves change their hues to vibrant reds, oranges and golds before being shed).
A spokesperson from Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre, says the festival invites visitors to experience the harmony found between nature and Japanese culture in an “unforgettable way”.
May 1 is reserved for children at an exclusive invitation-only event, where more than 300 children from across the area will join to explore and learn about Japanese culture through a variety of activities and demonstrations.
At 4pm that day, the gates will open to officially welcome everyone in an Oration, which will be presented by their special guest, His Excellency, Mr Suzuki Kazuhiro.
“This reflective address marks a meaningful moment in the festival, celebrating cultural ties and shared understanding.”
On Saturday, 2 May, the festival will celebrate Greenery Day with highlights including an Origami Workshop by Takya Ito, a Tsumami Zaiku Workshop by Yoshiko Ito, a comedy show by Sean Murphy and a tea ceremony by Urasenke Sydney.
Displays and performances include Kyudo Kai (Japanese Archery) by Kyudo Kai Sydney, a Kabuki Performance by Za Kabuki Club Canberra, a calligraphy display by Taz McLaren, a Kimono Showcase by Sarah Harada, a Soprano Singer Performance by Atsuko and Singing Bowls Meditation in the Edo Cottage by Crystal Heart Healing.
From folding intricate designs, admiring the beauty of kimono displays, or simply soaking in the autumn garden, Kaitlyn says Koyo Matsuri (The Autumn Festival) promises to be a memorable experience for all.
