As the summer heat begins to wane, the Cherrypickers are starting to simmer as they ramp up their preparations for one of regional rugby league’s most storied events; the 53rd annual West Wyalong Knockout.
Weeks away from the first whistle blow at Ron Crowe Oval, the Cherrypickers are now dusting off their boots as they pursue another title at the pre-season tournament.
Hosted by the West Wyalong Rugby League Mallee Men (who have hosted it annually since its establishment in 1970), the competition has grown from its modest origins to become one of the most prestigious pre-season rugby league knockout championships in NSW, drawing in teams from across the state. $20,000 is on offer for the winners of the championships, a figure the Cherrypickers have set firmly in their sights.
Claiming victory in 2023 with a 10-0 grand final win over the Wagga Kangaroos, the team has consistently been a force to be reckoned with, reaching finals and pushing other teams to perform at their best.
Despite occasional setbacks, the Cherrypickers have used the tournament as a launchpad for successful seasons in Group 9.
Pre-season training has blended seasoned veterans and emerging talent with young guns Lachlan Bailey and Lachlan Shea making a standout performance during training. Both recently graduating from the U18 team in 2025, the boys have been praised for their leadership, versatility and dedication. They are expected to feature in the Cherrypicker’s lineup at the championships.
Getting down to the nitty-gritty, the team is hard at work as they prepare to reclaim their 2023 crown. Promising thrills, spills and the raw passion that defines country rugby league, the Cherrypicker’s are looking at the long ride and taking the 2026 win.
