Young Hospital Auxiliary Celebrates 95 Years of Dedication and Community Spirit

The Young Hospital Auxiliary marked an incredible milestone recently, celebrating its 95th anniversary with a joyful and heartfelt luncheon at the Young Golf Club on Sunday. The event brought together over 60 guests, including current and past members, community supporters, and special guests, all eager to recognise the long-standing contributions of this vital local organisation.

Auxiliary President Janice Ward welcomed the attendees and set the tone for the afternoon with a warm speech that highlighted the Auxiliary’s enduring legacy.

“For 95 years, our members have worked tirelessly to support the hospital and the broader Young community,” she said. “Today is not just about looking back on our history, but also about celebrating the people who’ve kept this organisation alive for nearly a century.”

Janice shared a brief history of the Auxiliary, reflecting on the many generations of volunteers who had contributed over the decades. She read out the names of former members, noting how family names often reappear, with new generations stepping in to continue the legacy of community service.

“It’s humbling to see how deeply rooted this Auxiliary is in our town’s history,” she added. The day’s special guest speaker, Jessica Conneely from Dancing4Wellbeing, captivated the audience with an uplifting and interactive presentation on the importance of movement as we age.

“Movement is medicine,” Jessica said. “You don’t need to lift heavy weights or run marathons to keep your body healthy. Small, regular movements can make a big difference to how we feel, both physically and mentally.”

Jessica led a light-hearted exercise session that had everyone joining in, proving that fitness can be fun and achievable at any age.

“I always say, if you can tap your toes to a tune or reach for a teacup, you’re already on your way to better health,” she said with a smile.

Following the presentation, attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch and a beautifully decorated birthday cake, which life member Chris Page and President Ward ceremonially cut. The moment was met with applause, and the cake, naturally, was quickly enjoyed by all.

Adding to the celebratory spirit was a generous raffle, with the top prize being a wine tasting and grazing experience for ten people at Grove Estate. Patron Nancy McGregor drew the winning ticket, which Tiffany Shean claimed.

The Auxiliary expressed sincere thanks to Grove Estate for donating the prize and to all those who purchased raffle tickets.

“The support we receive from local businesses and the public makes all the difference,” said Ward. “Their generosity ensures we can continue our work and support the hospital with essential equipment and services.”

As the luncheon came to a close, there was a palpable sense of pride and gratitude in the room. The Young Hospital Auxiliary has not only stood the test of time but has grown into a symbol of community strength, compassion, and service.

“I think what today really showed,” Jessica Conneely later reflected, “is that connection, movement, and community go hand in hand. And this Auxiliary is the perfect example of that spirit in action.”

With 95 years behind them and no signs of slowing down, the Young Hospital Auxiliary continues to be a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with purpose and heart.
