The Hilltops Theatre Company proudly awarded Rob Provan a Life Membership an honour reserved only for the most dedicated and impactful contributors to the group.
For those involved in theatre across Young and the broader Hilltops region, the announcement came as no surprise. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, Rob has been a constant and vital force in local theatre for nearly three decades. From directing Shakespearean classics to donning fishnets for pantomimes, his versatility, creativity, and dedication have helped shape the region’s performing arts community.
For Rob, the moment was both humbling and surprising. “I honestly didn’t expect it,” he said. “They listed all the shows I’d worked on, and I had to stop and think back I’d forgotten how many there were!”
Rob’s journey with Hilltops Theatre Company began around 1998, but his involvement in theatre dates back even further. As a young member of the Genesian Theatre Company in Sydney, Rob started out working backstage focusing on lighting.
“I started with tech and lighting,” he recalls. “Then a one-act play festival came up in Eastwood, and they needed someone who could do a North Country British accent. I gave it a go and ended up with the part.”
That small supporting role was the start of something much bigger. Since then, Rob has acted in, directed, and produced countless productions. His on-stage roles have included memorable performances in The Pirates of Penzance, Sweet Charity, Barney’s Fair, Dimboola, The Sound of Music, Siblings, My Fair Lady, and numerous beloved pantomimes.
Behind the curtain, his directorial credits are just as extensive. He’s helmed productions of Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Calendar Girls, The Naked Truth, The Addams Family, The Venetian Twins, and Daylight Savings, to name a few. Many of these shows featured sold-out performances and creative staging that reflected Rob’s willingness to experiment and innovate, especially in unconventional venues.
One of Rob’s most personal and powerful contributions came in the form of a play he wrote and directed himself: ANZAC on the Wall. Based on a poem of the same name, the play explores themes of war, memory, and national identity. The idea came to Rob while looking for a production to mark a World War I centenary event. “They wanted something respectful and engaging, perhaps performed over a meal,” he explained. “But I couldn’t find anything that truly resonated.” That’s when he came across the poem Anzac on the Wall.
Moved by its emotional depth, Rob reached out to the poet for permission to adapt it into a play and got the green light. “I started writing, researching through the War Memorial. At one point, it became so emotionally heavy that I had to stop. But I knew I had to finish it,” he said.
The play debuted to strong community acclaim and was later performed locally at Zouch, transform-ing the space into an intimate and moving theatrical experience. Though musicals are often the crowd-pleasers, Rob’s passion lies in drama particularly stories that reflect real life.
“Musicals are fun, and they sell well, but I’m drawn to theatre that says something about life. That’s probably why I loved doing Anzac on the Wall,” he said. But he’s not one to shy away from the lighter side of theatre either. Known for his comedic timing and willingness to throw himself into any role Rob has helped bring laughter and levity to the stage time and time again.
Rob’s work off-stage is just as impactful. He’s served as President and Vice President of the theatre company, guiding it through significant changes including its re-naming to better reflect the whole Hilltops community.
“I was president for three years,” Rob said. “Eventually, I felt it was time for someone new to step in. I encouraged Carmen Thackeray to take over, and she agreed on the condition that I stay on as vice president to support her.” Though he insists she doesn’t need much help, Rob’s support and mentorship continue to be valued.
He’s also been instrumental in technical design from lighting and sound to set building and staging logistics. When The Addams Family was staged, he took on the challenge of stage direction in a venue with extremely limited space. The solution? Incorporating scene changes into the performance it-elf. “We had no room backstage,” he said. “So I decided to make the scene changes part of the show. Let the audience see what’s happening it adds to the charm.”
While Rob has taken a step back recently to care for his unwell wife, he remains closely connected to the theatre community. He’s not involved in the company’s upcoming production of Legally Blonde but has offered to help if needed. “They’ve got a strong production team on that one,” he said. “But if they need me, I’ll be there.”
From his leadership to his acting chops, from set building to sound tech, Rob has worn nearly every hat the stage can offer and he’s done it all with a quiet enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to community theatre.
