Young’s own rising stars, The Kirks, are quickly building a name for themselves in the Riverina music scene with their infectious energy, pub rock anthems, and unmistakable Aussie sound. The three-piece band Jack Murray on guitar and vocals, Tom McEvoy on bass and lead vocals, and Will Anderson on drums formed 18 months ago and have since made an impressive impact playing at pubs, clubs, and private functions across the region. With a style rooted in classic pub rock and contemporary Australian indie music, their sound blends nostalgia with a fresh, youthful edge that has earned them a dedicated following.
Their most recent gig at the Australian Hotel in Young on Saturday, May 24, was no exception. Despite the chilly night, locals turned out in strong numbers, packing the venue and braving the cold for a taste of live music. The Kirks did not disappoint, delivering a high-energy set that had the crowd singing, dancing, and asking for more.
This weekend, the band will take their sound to a wider audience as part of the Henry Lawson Festival in Grenfell, an opportunity they’re thrilled about.
“It’s always a good time playing in front of a new crowd,” said lead vocalist Jack Murray.
“We’re stoked to be a part of such a great regional event and represent Young with our music.”
The band’s origins are as laid-back as their sound is lively. The trio were all working at the Young Services Club when they played their first official gig in January 2024. It was there that their musical chemistry became obvious.
The name The Kirks came about in true Aussie fashion while sitting around enjoying a cold can of Kirks Pasito. “It just kind of stuck,” Jack Murray laughed. “We didn’t overthink it. It felt right, and it’s become a bit of a talking point too.”
Since then, the band has built a steady reputation, booking regular gigs and growing their setlist with covers and original songs that speak to the spirit of country towns and the joy of a live pub gig. While still early in their musical journey, The Kirks have shown a maturity in their sound and performance that belies their short time on the circuit.
