A new chapter in mental health support has officially begun, with the opening of the town’s first walk-in Medicare mental health centre in the heart of the community. The new service, operated by Grand Pacific Health and jointly funded by the state and federal governments, allows locals to access free mental health care without needing a referral or even a Medicare card. It follows the successful opening of a similar centre in Wagga Wagga earlier this year.
“This is a big step for Young,” said Adam Phillips, CEO of Grand Pacific Health.
“Young is one of those unique areas that often misses out it’s just far enough from major centres that people have to travel for services. Now, that changes.”
The centre has already supported over 100 people through more than 1,000 sessions, providing a vital entry point for anyone in need of mental health care. Julie Redway from the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network said the goal is early intervention.
“We’re working to reduce the barriers people face when accessing mental health services. This centre brings help closer to home.”
The facility offers a fully staffed, multidisciplinary team all local workers. “We were initially concerned about staffing in a regional area like Young,” Phillips admitted, “but we were pleasantly surprised by the number of qualified professionals right here in the community.”
Labor’s candidate for Riverina, Mark Jeffreson, welcomed the model. “I’ve been pulling out my Medicare card all over the region saying, ‘This is all you need.’ But here, you don’t even need that. Just walk in.”
Senator Deborah O’Neill added that the service is designed to create a smooth experience for those seeking support.
“This is about making that journey to wellness as seamless and welcoming as possible.”
In addition to mental health care, the centre also offers alcohol and other drug family support services, further broadening its reach and impact in the community. With doors now open, the new centre marks a major win for Young, offering hope, help, and health, right where it’s needed most.
