In a heartfelt moment of recognition, Marg Pestell, a stalwart of the equestrian community, was recently honoured with Life Membership of Pony Club NSW at the State Meeting in Liverpool.
This prestigious recognition is a testament to Marg’s extraordinary dedication and years of service to the Young Pony Club, as well as her unwavering commitment to the broader equestrian world.
Marg’s journey with Pony Club began in 1948, a year that marked the inception of the Young Pony Club. She has been an integral part of the club ever since, holding numerous pivotal roles throughout her long and illustrious career. Her contributions have shaped the club into what it is today, and her impact has been felt not just locally, but across the entire state and beyond.
For 18 years, Marg served as the President of the Young Pony Club, a position that required both leadership and passion. She also dedicated a decade to the role of Chief Instructor, imparting her wealth of knowledge to countless riders and nurturing their skills and love for the equestrian world.
For 38 years, she was the Chief Instructor for Zone 2, overseeing and guiding clubs across a vast region that spans from Canowindra in the north to Temora in the west, and from Gundagai to Grenfell. Marg’s service to Pony Club NSW was further exemplified through her significant roles within the state’s executive and Council, where her contributions were invaluable. She was also a founding member of the Harden Horse Trials Association and served as secretary for 34 years.
Her commitment to the equestrian community extended to the Young Rodeo and the Young Riding for the Disabled Association, where her tireless work was instrumental in advancing both organisations.
In 2003, Marg’s contributions to the community were formally recognised when she was named the Young Australian Citizen of the Year, and in 2006, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to equestrianism and the broader community. These accolades, along with her new Life Membership from Pony Club NSW, are a fitting tribute to her lifelong dedication.
Antonia Brown, President of Zone 2, spoke highly of Marg’s influence and enduring legacy.
“Marg has been part of horses and Young Pony Club since its inception in 1948. She rode at the first Young Pony Club camp that year and has been involved ever since,” said Brown.
“She’s held every position within Young Pony Club, including President for 18 years and Chief Instructor for 10. Her service as Zone Chief Instructor for 38 years is a monumental achievement. Marg has always been that person to lend a hand, whether it’s at a state meeting or cutting onions in the canteen. She understands the importance of every detail that makes an event successful.”
For Brown, who has known Marg since she was a child, the recognition is well deserved.
“Marg has influenced kids in clubs not only in Young, but across Zone 2 and the entire state. Her impact is immeasurable. She’s always there, offering wise words and support, no matter the task,” said Brown.
“She’s earned the respect of everyone who’s had the pleasure of working with her.”
Being awarded Life Membership of Pony Club NSW is an exceptional honour, one that is reserved for individuals who have made an outstanding and lasting contribution to the organisation.
With only a handful of Life Members in the history of the Pony Club, this recognition places Marg in the highest echelon of equestrian leadership in the state.
Marg’s passion for Pony Club and her tireless dedication to fostering the next generation of equestrians have earned her the admiration of all who know her. Her legacy will continue to inspire those involved in Pony Club for many years to come, as she remains an iconic figure in the local and state equestrian communities.
