On Saturday, March 8th, local poet and former English teacher Barbara Granger will be hosting a poetry workshop at the Young Services Club from 10am to 1 pm.
The workshop, open to everyone for just $25 per person, promises to be a fun and interactive experience, inviting participants to explore the art of poetry in a relaxed and engaging environment. To register, contact Jennifer Haynes at 0457 903 240.
Barbara Granger, who is well-known in the Young and District community, has a wealth of experience in the field of education. With a Bachelor’s degree and a Diploma in Education from Sydney, she spent many years teaching Secondary English, intensively studying poetry as part of her teacher training. Barbara’s dedication to English education was evident in her career, particularly in her role as an HSC English marker from 1990 to 2009. Since her retirement, she has continued to be active in the community, assessing writing and poetry competitions and inspiring others through her passion for the written word.
Jennifer Haynes, who has been involved in organising the workshop, shared her excitement about the event.
“Barbara has been an English teacher here for many years, and I know she’s incredibly passionate about poetry,” Jennifer said. “On the day, people can expect a lot of fun while exploring poetry in a way that’s very different from the traditional classroom experience. Barbara has provided us with a selection of poems and will teach us about poetic devices in a hands-on, enjoyable way.”
Participants will have the opportunity to write their own verses, and there will be a safe and welcoming space for everyone to share their creations with the group.
“We hope this workshop inspires people to get involved in poetry competitions,” Jennifer added, referencing the major poetry competition held in Young later in the year. “We really want people to leave feeling inspired and confident in their own writing.”
The workshop will be held in the Ibis Room upstairs at the YSC, with a limit of 20 spots available. After the workshop, attendees are invited to join Barbara downstairs for a casual coffee and further discussion in a relaxed, informal setting. Barbara’s passion for poetry and education extends beyond the classroom. She has been actively involved in the English Teachers’ Association and contributed to the HSC for over two decades.
In addition to her work in teaching, Barbara has also made significant contributions to theatre productions, public speaking, and debating, always going above and beyond to support the curriculum and inspire her students.
