The Young Yabbies are unphased by the loss of established roster members and prepare to continue the winning streak, as the pre-season begins, which has seen the side win a three-peat over recent years.
The Yabbies roster has experienced heavy blows with the loss of many long time members. This includes the great Calum Mcaffery. Calum will be hanging up his boots after being a solid player whose role on the team helped the Yabbies win three straight championships.
Club President, Nick Duff said “We have lost a few old heads, people are moving on for different reasons but it’s always exciting to see some new faces come through. Definitely, it’s sad to see some of our core members drop off but the new younger boys are hungry and it would be pretty special if we could go for four straight this year.”
The club also saw the loss of Tom Mullany who won the coach’s award last season for his excelsior performance “he’s been our Five-Eight for the past few seasons and he will be retiring now”.
Nick said “he’s been a good servant over many years coming through the junior ranks and then giving back to the seniors and the club as a whole over the last few years.”
Fortunately, the club is sticking with its same coaching and management staff which will bring stability and continued strength to the side.
The Yabbies held their first training of the year last Tuesday and Nick was impressed with the turnout.
“It was considerably good even though it was a 39 degree day about 30 men and women showed up for the first practice of the year, which is great because it was so hot”.
Trainings are held every Tuesday at 6:30 pm and are open to the public to come along regardless of ability.
“There will be fundraisers coming up through the year” Nick continues “Keep your eyes peeled for that if you are looking for an opportunity to support the club.”
