The Southern Inland Swimming Association (SISA) held its Speedo Sprint Championship over the weekend, hosted at the Young Aquatic Centre for the first time.

The two-day event gave young swimmers from across Young and surrounding regions the chance to compete.

Young Amateur Swimming Club President Renee Williams shares her excitement for the event, “It’s been an amazing experience to bring the SISA Speedo Sprint Championship to Young,” Williams shared.

“We have so many talented swimmers in our region, and it’s fantastic to see them compete at such a high level. The event was a real celebration of our swimming community.”

This year’s championship saw impressive performances across the board, The Young Amateur Swimming Club came in as strong runners-up.

Wagga Wagga Swimming Club dominated the competition, taking home the 2024/2025 Southern Inland Swimming Association Long Course Club Championship.

One of the standout stories from the weekend came from Young’s own 12 & Under Boys Relay Team. Rory Brodbeck, Nate Williams, Sam Presser, and Kynan Burgess dominated both the freestyle and medley relay events, winning both the Hayes Medley Shield and the Poynter Freestyle Shield.

As for the Young Swimming Club itself, the talent on display was a testament to the hard work put in by the dedicated swimmers and coaches.

The club welcomes swimmers of all levels, from beginners to competitive athletes. “What I love most about being part of the Young Amateur Swimming Club is the sense of community,” Renee said.

“It’s like a big family, and it’s more than just about swimming. It’s about building confidence, making lifelong friendships, and supporting each other.”

Training for competitive swimmers is rigorous, demanding up to five practices a week. These sessions include early morning and afternoon practices, and even a holiday swim camp helping to prepare swimmers for the busy carnival season.

The Young Swimming Club has more exciting events coming, including their Club Championships on Friday nights and upcoming carnivals in Gundagai and Temora. Additionally, seven swimmers from the club, including the victorious 12 & Under Boys Relay Team, have qualified to represent Young at the NSW Country Championships in Sydney later this month.

Williams emphasised that the true heart of the club lies in its community spirit. “It takes a village to keep the club running,” she said.

“We rely heavily on our parent volunteers and committee members, and we’re always looking for new people to help out. It’s rewarding to see how much these families give back, whether it’s through coaching, fundraising, or simply cheering on the kids.”

The club is also thankful for its sponsors, including SWSBank, Perfect Streamlines, Bunnings, and many others, whose support helps keep the club running smoothly.

For anyone interested in joining the Young Amateur Swimming Club or learning more about the sport, Williams encouraged reaching out via email at youngswimmingclub@gmail.com or visiting the Young Aquatic Centre on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons.
