Over the weekend, there was an enormous and overwhelming response from the Young community for the ‘One More Round for Roy’ initiative, demonstrating the strength of the community in what was an incredible 24-hour fundraising event in the fight against Motor Neurone Disease and raising Stroke Awareness.
Roy Jewitt who is a beloved community figure, sports person and advocate for MND and cancer research had planned to hold a fundraiser independently, however, after suffering a major stroke Roy was unable to follow through with these plans.
In an effort to support Roy on his recovery journey A GoFundMe page was founded to raise funds for Roy’s immediate surgery, which saw rapid success raising $50,000, a true testament to the wonderful person that Roy is. Following this a small team of dedicated volunteers came together with an ambitious project they were calling ‘One More Round For Roy’. It didn’t take long for the initiative to gain traction through the community with locals eager to participate and raise money for MND.
The target of the fundraiser was to raise an additional $50,000 and through the strong efforts of individuals coming together to row, ride and run in the fight against MND, the estimated funds have far exceeded the team target.

Roy’s son, Jesse shared his thanks on behalf of himself and his father saying “The support has just been absolutely unreal, both myself and dad are really thankful for everything that you have all done.”
Jesse was one of three participants to have been active in the event for the entire 24 hours. Along with Matt Horder and Narelle Dearden who ran, rode and rowed every hour for the entire 24 hours.
Jesse suffered a hamstring injury early on Saturday morning and amazingly three of his mates Jack Keevil, Bob Ashton, Lucy Spring and Mel Spring offered to step in and complete the remaining hours on his behalf.
“It was so incredible to see so many people getting involved” Jesse continued “We can’t believe just how many people are willing to support us in such a good cause.”
While the love within our community radiated from Cranfield Oval, The One More Round For Roy merchandise can now be seen every time you leave your home in Young. People sporting fashionable clothing is an ongoing statement of the strength and power that resides within the community.
