Yabbies set for 2025 campaign with coaches chosen and committee formed

Tom Cummins sends one towards the post.

The Young Yabbies will look to continue their run as the powerhouse club of the South West Fuels Cup rugby union competition in 2025 after announcing their coaches and committee recently.

The Yabbies, who have won the past three premierships in the competition, have had a quiet off-season, with the club’s AGM and coaching roles filled without unnecessary fanfare.

Yabbies President Nick Duff said that it is exciting to have both mentors continuing in their roles, after the club enjoyed the ultimate success in the Men’s competition alongside a finals berth in the Women’s Tens competition in 2024.

“Both coaches Will Munday and Beccy O’Connor are returning again,” he said.

“Beccy has been helping out with the women for quite a while and had taken over coaching last year and Will Munday has been our captain for the past two or three seasons and accepted a coaching role last year.

“They both will certainly be going around again, which is great and very exciting.”

The club’s AGM was also a success, with all key executive positions filled and a strong committee formed for the upcoming campaign.

“The Club has held its AGM and I’m going around again as President,” Duff said.

“Amy Read who is very familiar with the Club, has had a few years away and now moved back home, is Vice President, [while] Harry Gavey is Secretary and Simon Hobson is Treasurer. While the club is in pursuit of a remarkable fourth-straight title in what is becoming an incredible local spotting dynasty, Duff said that pre-season training will begin at the usual time of early February.

“We really haven’t spoken much rugby in the off-season with Will [Munday], it’s more about enjoying the down time and hanging out,” he said.

“I would say they would look to start pre-season training in early February.”

As for the club’s pre-season trials, Duff said they have organised a similar schedule to this season, with hit outs at the Boorowa Beer and Rugby Festival and a local derby against Harden.

“We will certainly be doing the Boorowa Beer and Rugby Festival again,” he said.

“They do a terrific job and it’s always such a great day, and we are happy to be a part of that again.

“We will probably look at doing a one-off friendly, nothing too substantial, with potentially Harden.

“We’ve been doing that for the past few years and it seems to be working well.”
