Young cricket prodigy makes his mark with stunning performance at Inter-Regional Championships

Local junior cricketer Noah Platt is looking to make the most of even higher representative honours after a remarkable spell of bowling at the recent NSWCHS Inter-Regional Cricket Championships saw him receive a Certificate of Cricket Excellence following the event.

The Young High School Year 7 student took 5-29 in 9 overs for the Riverina Opens team in their match against the South Coast side, a feat made all the more remarkable given that he is four years younger than most of his competitors in what is a Year 11 carnival.

Noah’s mother Jenny Platt said that his performance is more than likely the only one of its kind by a Year 7 student in the history of the carnival.

“After those five wickets in that particular game and it’s an opens carnival, we were told that he is the first Year 7 student that has played in the Opens carnival in thirty years,” she said.

“He’d be the first Year 7 student to get five wickets in a game.”

The up-and-coming star’s performance was not by chance according to his mother, with his hard work in training being rewarded out in the middle.

“Leading up to that carnival Noah has recently been involved with the Riverina Cricket Zone NSW Academy and leading up to that he does a lot of physical training, exercise routines as part of that program, which has helped him to get into those carnivals and developing the physical fitness and the mindset ready for those things,” she said.

“He has done a little bit of work with some of the kids that were in the South Coast team so he knew some of them.”

Next up for Noah is a trip to the Central Coast to test his mettle against some of the best cricketers aged 15 and younger at the NSW All Schools tournament later this month.

“He’s been picked in the Combined High Schools Under 15s team (which is a Year 9 team) and they are going to Tuggerah at the end of the month,” Jenny said.

“He has a two-day trial for selection for the All-Schools team.

“If he gets selected there it will be to Nationals from there as that is forming the NSW team.”

“We only found out last week too that along with his CHS selection for Under 15s, he has also made selection into the Bradman Cup carnival, which starts at the end of this month.

“There’s a two-day carnival and then a four-day carnival at the end of January.

“It’s an Under 16s competition and the winner of that carnival plays the winner of the Green Shield which is a metro carnival.”

As for where the talented young bowler may end up, Jenny said he has the ultimate ambition of following in Nathan Lyon’s footsteps in going from the local fields of Young to the big stage and a potential baggy green.

“He has ambitions to go further in the game, he’s loving the idea of wearing the Baggy Green one day,” she said.

“He is definitely following his NSW pathways.”

“May as well go top shelf if you can.”

Noah said that the experience of playing at the CHS carnival was a great opportunity and that he is looking forward to the challenge of continuing to chase his dreams at Tuggerah.

“It was pretty exciting, and having the opportunity to play at those sorts of carnivals, especially that one,” he said.

“Going to Tuggerah will be pretty exciting, and once again playing with different kids that I haven’t met before.

“I just hope to keep performing at these types of carnivals at my age, hoping to get the chance just to score runs and get wickets and hopefully wear a baggy green one day.”

As for his approach to the high pressure moments, he said he just sticks to a tried and tested formula which any cricketer can attest to the success of.

“I just try to bowl full and straight, and try to read the batters and get them out.”
